Manning Veterans' history book project

In 2012, the Logeland Studio in Harlan closed their doors forever. An ad was placed in local area newspapers to alert anyone interested in their pictures to come to Harlan, and for a fee they could purchase the whole packet; including prints and/or negatives.

I made the trip to Harlan and worked out a deal with the owner to purchase the Manning portion of copyrighted photos.
On several sessions over a week I made the trip down to Harlan to go through the thousands of packets of pictures. Fortunately most of them were categorized in boxes by year and community, but I still skimmed through the dozens of large boxes for familiar names.

If I saw a name I recognized I grabbed the packet, so I may have a few packets of events/people from nearby communities but most are connected to Manning.

Most of the packets are from the 1970s through early 1990s and a few are from the late 1960s.

The main theme of the packets are senior pictures and wedding photo sessions, but there are also some sports related and other miscellaneous events that were photographed.

Sadly very few people from the surrounding area came to claim their old pictures. Only one other person from Manning claimed one of their packets.

So for the tens of thousands of photos/negatives that went unclaimed they were eventually thrown in a dumpster and are now gone forever.

As I sat thumbing trough the thousands of packets - one of the ideas I came up with for a fundraising project was - for a donation to the Manning Veterans' history book project a family member would get the wedding packet which includes all pictures and negatives from the photo session by Logeland Studio.

Most couples only chose a few of the prints they wanted from the time of their wedding day. There are generally 40 to 80 negatives in a packet, so in most cases there are many more pictures the couples didn't purchase at that time. You may be pleasantly surprised at some of the people you'll find in the pictures/negatives you did not get copies of during the original session.

I have scanned a random number of pictures/negatives from each wedding packet and can e-mail some thumbnail copies to couples or their children to look at.

If your name is listed below and even if no one in your family is interested in the pictures please e-mail me anyway. There is a lot of history in many of the pictures such as your parents and grandparents (most who are deceased), pastors, friends who are no longer living, interesting scenes in the church or fellowship hall, etc. I'd like to get names for many of these people to archive them in Manning's historical database.

I would encourage anyone not interested in their wedding photos to ask their children if they are interested, so they can have those images of their grandparents and great-grandparents.

These packets will only go to the couple or their children…Only for immediate family members.

If you are interested in your packet please e-mail me and we can work out the details.

Please remember - while I spent a lot of time saving these wedding pictures from the landfill, and I had to pay for the material and copyrights - all money donated from the sale of these packets will go to the Manning Veterans' history book project. The checks will be made out to Manning Veterans' history book committee (MVHBC).

I hope you will seriously consider making the donation to the Manning Veterans' history book project for your wedding packet.

Like with the previous Manning Quasqui and Manning School history book projects…A lot of extra funds have to be raised to complete the Veterans' book project.

NO one makes any money from these history book projects…100% volunteer and some of the volunteers spend a lot of their own money to assist with these projects.

I have scanned some of the negatives from the packets and they convert very well to digital images.
One thing nice about today's technology is you can adjust the contrast, brightness, color, and resolution of these negatives and actually improve upon the original image in many cases. The scratches and marks that are on the negatives can be digitally cleaned up using graphics software.
If you take the negatives to a professional they should be able to compensate for under/over-exposure and improve the color, and also clean up marks and scratches.
