MARIA GRAU was born
on April 4, 1829, in Schleswig Holstein, Germany. She married JOHANN HEESCH, on May 12, 1850 a renter and tailor in Hitzhusen.
Johann was born in 1817, son of farmer Johann and Dorothea (Herbst) Heesch.
Children of Johann & Maria: Johann and Heinrich.
JOHANN HEESCH was born on May 20, 1851, in Weddlebrook, Hitzhusen, Schleswig Holstein, Germany.
HEINRICH DETLEV HEESCH was
born on November 8, 1855, in Weddlebrook. He was
christened on November 18, 1855. He worked in a machine shop and when he turned
21 and was about to be drafted into the German Army he decided to immigrate to
the United States which he did in 1876. His employer gave him the money for his
passage, and he went to Carroll County, Iowa, because his mother's relatives
lived there. He was married to VEEDEN WIEBKE CHRISTINE SIEVERS on November 8, 1890, in Manning, Iowa.
Christine was born on January 27, 1866, in Bunsag, Albersdorf, Germany. After coming to the United States and prior to her marriage, Veeden was a seamstress and operated a dress-making shop in Manning. After their marriage Heinrich and Veeden farmed first north of Manning and later moved to a farm south of Manning. In 1913 they moved to Pipestone County, Minnesota, to a 320 acre farm. This home place was purchased for $87.50 per acre. Their daughter Emma did not want to move since she had met John Schrum in Manning. Veeden passed away on October 8, 1930, and Heinrich passed away on January 21, 1937.
They had 8 children; Anna, John, Marie, Emma, Herman, William, Emil, and Irene.
EMMA JOHANNA HEESCH was born on December 17, 1894, in Manning. She was
married to JOHN CHRISTIAN SCHRUM on October 22, 1913. Emma passed away on
February 11, 1977.
They had four children; Carl, Elroy, Helen and Delmas.

DETLEF JACOB GRAU,
was born on July 27, 1833, in Bad Bramstedt,
Schleswig Holstein, Germany. He married SOPHIA MARGARETHA SACHLEBEN of the
village of Grossenaspe (6 miles northeast of Bad Bramstedt) on November 26, 1854. Sophia was born on September
20, 1832, to Claus Friedrick and Magdelena (Pieper) Sachleben in Schleswig Holstein, Germany. After
their marriage Detlef and Sophia lived in the Bad Bramstedt area until April 15, 1869, when
Detlef, his wife and five children came to America. Detlef was about to be drafted into the German Army and
this made him decide to take his family and immigrate to the U.S.A. They left
Germany in a sailboat and spent seven weeks and three days on the high seas arriving
in America on May 27, 1869. They settled in Davenport, Iowa, and later moved to
Wheatland, where they lived for five years. They then moved, with other German
families, to Westside, to a farm seven miles northwest of Westside. In 1876
they purchased 400 acres of farm land six miles north of Manning, and lived
there until 1884. This farm came to be known as the Old Grau Homestead. They
were one of the earliest settlers in this vicinity.
In 1884 they moved to Manning and lived there 39 years. SOPHIA passed away at their home on Monday, November 27, 1903. DETLEF passed away on September 1, 1923, in Manning.
Detlef and Sophia had nine children: Anna, August, Julius, Johann, Emma, Otto, and Grover.

AUGUST FRIEDRICH GRAU was
born on May 17, 1863, in Bad Bramstedt Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and baptized on May 31, 1863 at Neumunster. His
Godparents were Hans Reimann, Martin Friedrich Sachleben and Hans Sachleben. He
immigrated to America with his parents, Detlef and Sophia Grau, in April, 1869, at the age of six years.
August married MARIA ELIZABETH DOROTHEA HANSEN on January 20, 1885. Maria was born in Sehestedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on January 14, 1863, the oldest daughter of Peter and Ida (Suhr) Hansen. She came to America in 1881, with her parents, five brothers and one sister, also to the Westside area. After their marriage August and Maria went to farming on Maria's father's farm where they farmed for five years. In March 1891 they purchased a farm in Audubon County to which they moved and lived for 16 years. They moved from there in 1907 to another farm one and one half miles northeast of Manning, which they had purchased and lived there until retirement. In 1916 they moved to their home on Madison Street. August passed away on September 25, 1922. Maria passed away on October 27, 1934.
August and Maria had seven children: Emil, Johnny, Sophia, Ida, Clara, Herman, and Laura.

IDA GRAU was born on
February 19, 1891, in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She married AUGUST
HERMAN KUSEL on May 29, 1919. August was born on March 25, 1883, on a farm in
Washington Township, Carroll County, Iowa. August passed away at their home on August
10, 1957. Ida passed away on November 8, 1980.
Ida and August had two children; AMOS and MELVIN.
