Following graduation Alvan worked at Manning Trust and Savings Bank for one year before returning to work on the farm.

On October 3, 1942, Alvan was united in marriage with Elaine Schroeder in Manilla. Four children were born to this union. Shortly thereafter, Alvan entered the United States Army and served in staff administration in Texas. Grandpa

From the day I saw your eyes,

I knew I had the best grandpa, what a surprise.

The day you held me in your arms,

I knew I was safe from all harm.

Then I decided to sit on your lap,

There I could just lay and take a nap.

As I got older you would take me and play ball.

Then there were those days when we would go to the Legion Hall.

You were there for all those special days,

Giving me oh so much praise.

You loved everyone with all your heart,

And loved grandma and never wanted to be apart.

What are we going to do,

Now that we don't have you?

It's all in God's hands now,

And I can't quite wonder why and how?

I came home on time Saturday night,

To see a note placed on the table just right.

"Grandpas not well, everything's ok, go to bed when you get home,"

I knew something about that note was totally wrong, so I decided to pick up the phone.

"What is wrong with my grandpa,

"Grandpa died tonight," said my mom.

"No," was what I first screamed and cried,

I can't believe my grandpa actually died.

My mom was actually right,

Grandpa is in a better place tonight.

Someday just like him,

We will all live again.

So you go on with your days,

Giving the Lord glory and praise.

Live your life like it was your last day,

Because you never know when the Lord might say,

It's your time to go.

But Lord I ask this of you,

Keep my grandpa safe, and watch over my grandma too.
