Alan L. Hargens, 78 passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017, at the V.A. Central Iowa Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Private committal services will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, Iowa, at a later date. Brooks Funeral Care of Des Moines Iowa, in charge of arrangements.

Alan is survived by his children, Gina (Fred) Schmidt of Milford and Robert Hargens of Spirit, Lake, one grandchild, Adam Schmidt and Fiance, Meridith Abbott of Seattle, and his faithful dog, Buddy. He is, also survived by three sisters: Marlene (Leo) Zimmerman, Lila (Dennis) Forke, Lori (Darrell) Voege, brother, Arden Hargens and sister-in-law, (Deborah Hargens and many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, sister, Marion and her husband, Junior Bartelson; and brother, Jerry Deborah) Hargens; and sister-in-law Gloria (Arden) Hargens.

Alan was born December 6, 1938, on a farm near Manning, Iowa, the son of Louie and Elsie (Sinow) Hargens. He graduated eighth grade from a one room school-house (Iowa No. 8) and from Manning Community High School in 1956. Shortly after high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served in Korea and Japan. After four years of service he was honorably discharged. He married Mary Pruess with whom he had two children. They later divorced.

Alan spent his life in the long-haul trucking industry. At the time of his retirement he was the owner of Alan L. Hargens Transport Company. In retirement he enjoyed small engine repair and tinkering with old cars.
