Lyle "Red" Arp , son of Henry & Catherine (Passick) Arp, joined the Navy in 1942.
His bootcamp training was at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station where he was assigned to Navy Pier Security.
During his service there he became ill from Rheumatic Fever and received a medical discharge in 1944.
Lyle achieved the rank of RT FC (Radio Technician First Class).

On August 2, 1942 Lyle married Dorothy Sutherland and they had 2 children, Ron and Janet.
Ron (deceased 1973) graduated from MHS in 1968.
Janet graduated from MHS in 1971. She married Gaylin Ranniger and they have 3 children; Alex, Abbey & Jacob (all 3 attended MHS).

Lyle Arp will leave next week to enter training in the Great Lakes Naval Training Station.

Lyle Arp Writes Home
Lyle Arp, now located at the U, S. Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, Ill., extends his appreciation to the Legion and the j Monitor for receiving the home paper.

He adds that Great Lakes is really a large place and well organized. Lyle has a rating of Petty Officer, Radio Technician, Third Class, equal to a Sergeant in the Army.
He says he will be at Great Lakes until Dec. 1 and then get a furlough, after which he will, attend a radio school somewhere.

Lyle Arp Has Medical Discharge
Lyle Arp writes us from Des Moines, telling us how much he enjoyed the home paper while in the service. He sends his thanks to the Legion and the Monitor.
Lyle's military service terminated Nov. 20th when he received an honorable medical discharge due to his long siege of illness.
The Navy transferred him to the Veterans Facilities at Des Moines where he is taking further treatment.

Lyle Otto, son of Henry and Catherine (Passick) Arp, was born June 13, 1921, at Manning, Iowa. He graduated from Manning High School in 1940 and lived his entire life in Manning. Lyle participated in basketball and football, earning four varsity letters in each sport. His senior year, Lyle was given the Outstanding Athlete Award. He attended Iowa State University for two years and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for a little over a year during WWII. Lyle received a medical discharge and returned to Manning.

On August 2, 1942, Lyle was united in marriage with Dorothy Sutherland at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. Two children were born to this union, Ronald Gordon and Janet Louise. He worked for a time at the Manning Creamery. Lyle then worked at the First National Bank from 1944 to 1990, serving as president for 27 years. After retiring he continued to serve as chairman of the bank’s board of directors. Lyle was honored as a member of the Iowa Bankers’ Association 50-year Society.

Lyle was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as treasurer for 25 years. He also served on the board of directors of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home, Manning General Hospital, and Manning Development Corporation. For 36 years, Lyle also served as treasurer of the Manning Community School board. He belonged to several Masonic bodies, including Manual Lodge No. 450 of Manning, Scottish Rite Bodies of Sioux City, Amity Chapter 93 R.A.M., Godfrey Commander No. 44 K.T. of Audubon, and Za-Ga-Zig Temple Shrine of Des Moines. Lyle was also a 50-year member of Salona Chapter O.E.S., American Legion, and the Iowa State University Alumni Association. He was also past-president of both the Manning Rotary Club and the Manning-Manilla Golf & Country Club.

In retirement Dorothy and Lyle traveled to Alaska, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China, South America, and across the United States. Lyle enjoyed fishing, playing cards, golfing, and following sports, especially the Iowa State Cyclones. Dorothy and Lyle were avid bowlers, and Lyle built the L & M Bowl with Max Detlefsen in 1961. Spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren, was very important to Lyle, and he was very proud of all their accomplishments.

Lyle’s wife of 66 years, Dorothy, died in December 2008. On May 21, 2009, Lyle moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. Following a short illness, he died unexpectedly at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at the age of 87 years, 11 months, and 28 days old.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Dorothy Arp; son Ronald Arp in 1973; brother Norman Arp; sister-in-law Jean Hugeback and brother-in-law Joe Knueven.

Lyle is survived by daughter Janet and husband Gaylin Ranniger of Manning; grandchildren: Alex Ranniger and wife Kari of Manning; Abbey and husband Aaron Stangl of Manning; and Jacob Ranniger of Manning; great-grandchildren: Aden and Anna Stangl; daughter-in-law Kathryn Ackley of Chicago, IL; sister Marian Knueven of Manning; sister-in-law Eleanor and husband Lyle Schrum Jr. of Urbandale and Ft. Myers, FL; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
