Bernard (Ben) Halbur, 90, of Halbur, a retired farmer, died Wednesday afternoon, June 27, 1984, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at St. Augustine church in Halbur with the Rev. Leo Riesberg as celebrant. A grandson, Gary Loeffelholz, will be lector; gift-bearers, granddaughters, will be Carla Halbur, Mary Schwaller, Janet Rohe and Diane Zubrod, and mass-servers, grandsons, will be Denny and Rodney Halbur and Jeff Sporrer. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military graveside rites by Emil Ewoldt American Legion Post No. 22 of Manning. Serving as casketbearers will be grandsons: Doug, Tim and Terry Halbur; Greg Schwaller, Kevin Sporrer, Larry Rohe and John Loeffelholz.

Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2 p.m. Friday. Rosaries will be recited at the funeral home at 3 and 8 p.m. and a scriptural prayer service will be conducted at 8:45 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Halbur is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Walter (Helen) Loeffelholz, Carroll; Mrs. Jerome (Agnes) Schwaller, Coon Rapids, and, Mrs. Harold (Rita) Sporrer, Manning; three sons: Edwin, Coon Rapids; Leander, Manning, and Louis Halbur, Manning: 52 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. John (Anna) Steffes, Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margaret on August 20, 1968; a daughter, Mrs. Vernon (Martha) Rohe, a grandson, Alan Rohe; two grandchildren: Kerry Jo and Kenzi Jo Sporrer; five brothers: Henry, Joseph, John, Frank, and William Halbur and a sister, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Stevens.

Mr. Halbur was born January 9, 1894, at Halbur, a son of Henry G. and Margaret Haverman Halbur. He attended schools in the Halbur area. On February 26, 1918, he entered the U.S. Army and served overseas during World War I, receiving the Purple Heart award and being discharged on May 18, 1919.

On August 22, 1922, he was married to Margaret Steffes at Holy Angels church in Roselle. After their marriage, they farmed four miles southwest of Halbur until 1955 when he retired and they moved into Halbur.

He had been a resident of the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home since November of 1973. He was a member of St. Augustine parish, the Holy Name Society, the Carroll Veterans of Foreign Wars post No. 2642 and was a 50-year member of the Manning American Legion Post.
