Bernard H. Lampe

Bernard H. Lampe of Bancroft, 98, died of heart failure Monday, November 27, 1989, in the Heritage Home at Bancroft where he had resided since September of last year.

Funeral mass for Mr. Lampe was celebrated by Father James Smith at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St John's Catholic Church. Burial was in the St. John's Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Post No. 377 of the American Legion at Bancroft. The Carry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of Bancroft was in charge of the arrangements.

Bernard Henry, son of Henry and Mary (Berning) Lampe, was born at Arcadia, Iowa, on January 21, 1891. Ben's mother died when he was a small child and his father later married Elizabeth Fritz. Ben attended rural school at Arcadia, then worked on the family farm.

He served with the Army during World War I and recently received his 70-year Legion pin. He was the last WW I Veteran living at Bancroft.

Ben was married to Ella Ahrendsen at Manning, Iowa, January 28, 1920.

They farmed in the Manning area until 1927 when the Lampes moved to the farm just south of Bancroft. It was in 1945 that they moved to their farm in Portland Township where they lived until 1957 when they retired and moved into Bancroft.

Mrs. Lampe died in August 16, 1974. Bert continued to live in their home until 1988 when he moved into the Heritage Nursing Home.

Ben loved the land, and as his hobbies, he enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and gardening.

He is survived by one daughter, Ethel, Mrs. Jim Steven of Ionia, Iowa; and three sons: Harold Lampe, Burt, Iowa; Eugene, Bancroft, Iowa; and Leonard of Nevada, Iowa.

There are 30 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Percy and Arnold are deceased.

Others who survive include a half-brother, Edward of National City, California; six half-sisters: Leona, Mrs. Francis McGregor, Bancroft, Iowa; Anna Doocy, Lone Rock, Iowa; Frances Wonderlick-Manners, Boulder, Colorado; Bertha Chalus, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Lorraine, Mrs. Ambrose Welp, Mesa, Arizona; and Dorothy, Mrs. Palmer Jensen, Santee, California.
