Alfred Harold "Barney," son of Henry Gustov and Anna (Wendt) Bargenquast, was born December 16, 1912, at Irwin, Iowa. He grew up in Manilla, graduating from Manilla High School in 1933. Following graduation, Barney worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps and farmed in Idaho.

Barney came back to Manilla and enlisted in the United States Navy on June 2, 1942. During World War II, he served as a SeaBee in the Southwest Pacific. On October 8, 1945, he received his honorable discharge, and returned to Manilla.

On June 27, 1946, Barney was united in marriage with Mary Margaret Boeck at Elko, Nevada. Seven children were born to this union. Barney and Mary farmed in Idaho for two years before returning to Manilla. Barney drove the maintainer for Crawford County and then drove cement truck for Rasmussen Lumber Company. He also worked part-time and evenings as a butcher for Milt Saylan Grocery. Following his retirement from Rasmussen’s in 1974, Barney scooped snow, mowed lawns, tilled gardens and ran errands for his neighbors and friends.

Barney was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed working outdoors and had a big garden of vegetables and flowers. He was very active in the community, participating in numerous activities. Barney’s family was very important to him.

On Tuesday, January 18, 2000, Barney died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Manilla. He reached the age of 87 years, 1 month and 2 days.

Barney is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Earl, Arnold, Henry, Alvin and Donald Bargenquast; and one sister Helen Bargenquast.
