Obituary.
July 23, 1897
Mr. Elisha Cole died at Paolo, Kansas, July 22, 1897. Funeral services were held there the morning following, and then the remains were shipped to this city, arriving here on the evening of the 23d. Saturday morning the remains, in charge of McPherson Post, G.A.R., and followed by immediate relatives and a few friends, were conveyed to Templeton, where interment took place at eleven a.m.

Mr. Cole was born in Ontario County, N.Y., in 1838, and removed in 1844 with his family to Dodge county, Wisconsin, where he resided until 1860, then enlisting in the Regular Army. In 1861 he was transferred to the Volunteer Army, becoming Orderly Sergeant of Company A, First Missouri Light Artillery, and he continued in the service until the termination of the war. Then returning to his old home in Wisconsin, he was married in 1867 to Miss Agnes Stephenson. In 1868 he moved to Tama County, Iowa, and in 1871 he and his family removed to Carroll county, settling upon the farm in Eden Township owned by him at the time of his death, and, which he occupied until March, 1896. He had been in poor health during the past few years, an old army wound giving him much trouble. Thinking a change of climate might be beneficial, he moved to Paola, Kansas, about a year ago, but instead of getting better he became gradually worse, the complication of troubles causing intense suffering during the last few weeks of his sickness.

Mrs. Cole, a son and four daughters survive and it is thought the family will make their future home in Carroll County, near their many and old time friends.
