Detlef Jacob Grau was the first man from Manning to enlist at the start of World War I.
He served six years in the U.S. Navy. He was the son of Claus & Mathilda Grau. Born in
1892 and died in 1959 in Great Falls, Montana, where he had lived for 23 years.

Detlef J. Grau Times Herald News service 1959 Manning - Funeral services for Detlef Jacob Grau, 67, were held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Lester Moore of the Manning Methodist Church officiating. Ray Pratt sang "In the Garden" and "Close to Thee", accompanied by Mrs. H.W. Hagedorn. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery, Ancel Crouch, Walter Martens, Amos Jahn, Louis Schroeder, Harold Moeller and Redford Miller were pallbearers. Son of Henry and Mathilda Grau. Mr. Grau was born April 24, 1892 near Manning, Carroll County. He was the first from Manning to enlist in the armed forces during World War I and served four years in the Navy. He was married to Ottie Thompson of Guthrie Center November 27, 1932. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Bryce (Janet) Brichard of Council Bluffs; two grandchildren; five brothers, Hugo and Albert Grau, Manilla; Henry Grau, Waupin, Wisconsin; Edward and Elmer Grau, Davenport; two sisters, Mrs. Pete (Amanda) Moeller, and Mrs. Charlie (Emma) Pfoltner, Manning; also nieces and nephews.
