John Leslie, son of John and Mildred (Erb) Doyel, was born February 1, 1946, on the farm where he grew up south of Manning in Audubon County, Iowa. He attended rural school then Manning Schools, graduating with the Class of 1965. After high school, John enlisted into the United States Navy where he served as a mechanic aboard the USS Independence Aircraft Carrier. They sailed to various ports including Italy and Vietnam. After his honorable discharge in 1969 John came back to Iowa to farm.

On March 3, 1973, John was united in marriage with Patricia Gaer. They were the parents of three sons living on the farm until 1985 when they moved into Manning. John then drove truck and worked on road construction.

Later he was united in marriage with Patricia Jo Gragg. They lived in Newton until his wife's death. John continued to live in the area until his health began to fail. He then moved back to Manning to be closer to his sons.

John was an outdoorsman, enjoying trapping and fishing. In his spare time, he played softball and horseshoes. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

John died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, January 12, 2017, at his home in Manning at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 11 days.
