Killed By Lightning

One area fatality was recorded Friday afternoon, May 18, 1962, when Edward Drees, 32, Manning, was killed instantly by lightning while on a tractor. Drees was working in a field on a farm owned by Mrs. Rose Gavin and located about seven miles south of Manning.

He is survived by his wife, the former Joan Lamp of Manning, a daughter Barbara, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Drees of Exira, four brothers and three sisters. The body is at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.

Military funeral rites will be held at 9 am Monday at Sacred Heart Church at Manning, with the Rev. Thomas Molloy officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Manning.
The rosary will be recited at 8:30 pm Saturday, at 3:00 and 7:30 pm Sunday at the Ohde Funeral Home, led by Fr. Molloy.

Military funeral services for Edward Henry Drees, Jr., 32, Manning, were held at 9 a.m. Monday, May 21. The requiem mass was read at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. Thomas Molloy; and interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Mr. Drees was killed by lightning May 18, 1962, while working in a field.

He was born August 19, 1929, at Carroll, a son of Edward Fred and Viola (Eischeid) Drees. He attended Washington Township School and moved to Audubon County with his family. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1951 until 1953, and was a member of the American Legion Post at Manning.

While living in Carroll County, he had been active as a 4-H leader and Rural Youth leader. His marriage to Joanne Lamp of Manning took place October 23, 1954. They lived three miles east and four miles south of Manning in Audubon County; and 'Mr. Drees farmed in partnership with Mrs. Rose Gavin. Their daughter, Barbara Ann, is in Kindergarten at Gray. He has served on the board of directors of the Audubon County Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus at Templeton.

Surviving in addition to his wife and daughter are his parents, who live at Exira; one brother, Dennis, Manning; one sister, Mrs. Gerald (Margene) Rule, Manilla; the following brothers and sisters at home: Merlin, Lyle, Janice, Donna, and Larry Drees; and his grandmother, Mrs. Lena Eischeid, Halbur.
