Erwin Hansen to be Honored

THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 1982 -- Manning Monitor

Erwin H. Hansen, a law partner in the Hansen and Bunz Law Firm, will be honored at an Open House Sunday, June 27, from 2-4 p.m. at the Hansen and Bunz Law Offices located at 206 Main, Manning. The Open House is in celebration of Mr. Hansen's fifty years in the legal profession and is sponsored by his staff.

Mr. Hansen has been a long time resident of Manning. After graduation from Manning High School, he entered Nebraska University in Lincoln where he received his B.A. degree in 1930 and graduated from law school there in 1932. He then came back to Manning where he established his law office above the Rober-Wehrmann dry goods department building. Since that time he has had offices in many locations throughout Manning until he established his present office located north of the post office in 1972.
Joining him in the legal profession are Claus Bunz and Thomas Jacobsen.
Mr. Hansen has served as the city attorney since 1946. Some of his other accomplishments include spending a total of 80 hearing days before the Federal Power Commission in Washington, D.C., to gain a natural gas franchise for Manning and Manilla. He accomplished the same objective for Woodbine in 1963. He helped establish the Aspinwall water system, and the Templeton sanitary sewer system. He also laid the legal groundwork to gain access to Bureau of Reclamation power from the Missouri River Basin for the town of Manning.

Mr. Hansen has no regrets looking back over the last 50 years and states that he is well satisfied with what he's done. Concerning the many projects he has been involved in, he states, "I have never seen a project in Manning fail that has been well thought out and presented to the people."

As he reminisced about the way a lawyer's work has changed, Mr. Hansen said with a grin, "What a lawyer does to make a living changes every ten years or so!"
As far as Mr. Hansen's future plans, he says he'll "just keep doing what he's always been doing."

Hansen remembers Manning

Manning News Journal

October 4, 2002

The late Erwin H. Hansen, who supported growth and progress of the city of Manning during his lifetime, has made provisions for his generous support to continue in years to come.

The respected Manning attorney who died Sept. 13 at the age of 95 made countless contributions to the City of Manning during the course of his life. Following graduation from Manning High School in 1924, he earned his law degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1932 when he established his law practice in Manning. Following impressive military service in the U.S. Army 1943-1945, he resumed his law practice in Manning and served as the City attorney for over 40 years. He was extremely active in community affairs and donated his time and talents to the growth and improvement of Manning and surrounding communities. He was instrumental in procurement of a natural gas franchise for Manning and Manilla in 1963. He helped to establish the Aspinwall water system and the Templeton sanitary sewer system. He also laid legal groundwork to gain access to Bureau of Reclamation power from the Missouri River Basin for, the city of Manning. Additionally, he was instrumental in the success of the Manning Hospital and Manning Plaza Nursing Home.

Hansen's passion in life was his work. In his later years he continued to practice law, serving of counsel with the Bunz and Gaffney law firm in Manning until the time of his death.

The community support Hansen demonstrated in life will continue. His Last Will and Testament establishes a trust known as the Erwin H. Hansen Trust which stipulates that the trust income for the first five years is to be given to a non-profit organization in Manning.

The trustees of the trust have been pleased to know that his estate will be used for the ongoing capital improvement projects of these organizations, including the convention center, gift shop and German-American restaurant project that is being worked an by the Manning Heritage Foundation.

The trust also provides that at the expiration of the five-year time period, the principal of the trust will be distributed as follows: one-fourth to the City Library Board of Trustees of the Manning Public Library of Manning; one-fourth to Zion Lutheran Church in Manning; and one-half to Manning Heritage Foundation.

Hansen was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was an avid reader who loved books, and he was a longtime supporter of Manning Heritage Foundation.
Grace Hansen of Omaha, NE, a sister of Erwin Hansen and one of the co-executors of his estate, stated that Erwin would have been pleased to know that his estate will be used for ongoing capital improvements, including the convention center, gift shop and German-American restaurant project that is being worked on by the Manning Heritage Foundation.

She hopes that her brother's gifts to these organizations will serve as seed and attract other gifts. The amount that will pass under his will to the trust will be approximately $600,000.

Having grown up in Manning, as well as having earned his living in Manning, Hansen always maintained that Manning had been kind and good to him and, what he wanted to do through his Last Will and Testament was to give something back.

Grace Hansen stated the charitable gifts provided for in Erwin's Last Will and Testament were very typical of him. He was extremely fond of Manning and always had the highest regard for and interest in, Main. She said he was a person who shunned the Spotlight and did not seek praise or public acclaim. Indeed, throughout his long legal career he, performed countless acts of public service and made significant contributions to community organizations and causes, most of which, by his choice, went unrecognized. She said, this was his wish and his way.

Jesus is my Lawyer in Heaven
Telling the Father why I should get in.
Jesus is my Lawyer in Heaven
Reminding Him He forgave me of sin;
Interceding constantly in my place
Standing there before the throne face to face.
Jesus is my Lawyer in Heaven
'Cause He faced the judgment
for a world of sin.
Jesus is my Lawyer in Heaven
Telling the Father why I should get in.

The man Jesus Christ, who gave
Himself a ransom for ALL...
