Emil enlisted in the United States Army December 19, 1917. He served his country in Fort Worden, Washington, with the Battery A 63 Regiment Field Artillery Battalion during World War I and also served for some time overseas. Private Kuhn was honorably discharged March 13, 1919.

Funeral services for Emil Kuhn were held Saturday, February 10, 1990 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated the ceremony with Fern Jensen as organist. Interment was in Manning City Cemetery with Kyle Schroeder, Jesse Pike, Art Kuhn, Kurt Schroeder, Albert Pike and Melvin Kusel as casketbearers.

Military Honors were provided by Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517, both of Manning, Iowa.

Emil, son of Fred and Pauline Tessman Kuhn, was born November 14, 1890 in Atlantic, Iowa. He was baptized February 18, 1891 at Atlantic and was confirmed April 12, 1908 at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. As a youth Emil worked as a hired hand on farms, first around Atlantic and later in Shelby County.

He enlisted in the United States Army December 19, 1917. He served his country in Ft. Worden, Washington during World War I and also served for some time overseas. He was honorably discharged March 13, 1919.

February 14, 1922 Emil was united in marriage with Margaret Stang at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. They farmed west of Manning, northwest of Aspinwall, and then returned to their farm one mile west of Manning. After their retirement they moved into Manning and on June 11, 1982 both Emil and Margaret entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. Margaret died September 15, 1987. Emil was a member of the VFW and throughout his life was involved in many activities in the Zion Lutheran Church.
Emil's health began to fail about a year ago and he died Thursday, February 8, 1990 at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home at the age of 99 years, 2 months and 25 days.

Besides his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, LaVerne Schroeder and by the following brothers and sisters: Fred Kuhn, Jr., Mary Pike, Lily Stuhr, Emma Wycoff, Ernest Kuhn, Frank Kuhn, Clara Hall, and Elsie Koehrsen.
Emil is survived by his daughter, Rozora Schroeder, of Manning; by two grandsons, Kyle Schroeder and his wife, Barbara, of Prior Lake, Minnesota and Kurt Schroeder and his wife, Laurie, of New Prague, Minnesota; by a sister, Minnie Kuhn, of St. Anthony Nursing Home, Carroll; by a brother-in-law, Art Koehrsen, of Peace Haven, Walnut; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Emil Kuhn is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
