DR. JOHN C. EDGERTON
1917 - 1987

Memorial services for Dr. John C. Edgerton were held Monday, July 6, 1987 at 2:00 p.m. at the Eastern Star Home, Boone, Iowa, and Tuesday, July 7, 1987 at 10:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Manning, Iowa.

Pastor Randy Ross officiated the Manning service with military honors by the Manning V.F.W. and American Legion Honor Guard.

John Charles Edgerton, son of Harley and Susie Edgerton, was born October 10, 1917 at Boone, Iowa. He grew up in the Boone area where he graduated from Boone High School and Boone Community College.
In 1941 he graduated from Still College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines and practiced medicine in Onawa, Iowa, until entering the United States Navy in 1942. He served as Chief Pharmacist in the Navy for 3 1/2 years.

Upon completion of Navy duty, Dr. Edgerton returned to Still College for a year of graduate work, during which time he also taught college classes and served as Asst. Polk County Coroner. He then practiced medicine at Wilden Hospital in Des Moines and at Battle Creek, Iowa, until 1956 when he joined the staff at Manning General Hospital and began his practice at Manning, Iowa.

Dr. Edgerton began his private practice in Manning in 1974 when he opened his clinic at 324 Main Street. He continued his practice there until the time of his death, having limited his practice during the past year.

Dr. Edgerton died Wednesday, July 1, 1987, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 69 years. In compliance with his wishes, his cremated remains will be scattered at sea by a United States Naval vessel. During his 45 years of medical practice, John Edgerton enjoyed his association with many physicians throughout the State of Iowa.

In 1973 he was appointed by Iowa Governor Robert Ray to the State Department of Health, a post he served until 1979.
He was honored by the Iowa Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons in May of 1987, when he was presented an honorary life membership in recognition of his distinguished service.
In addition to his associations with the medical field, he was a member of the Manning V.F.W. Post and the Manning American Legion. He has served as a firefighter, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He has been a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner for 40 years.
He was united in marriage with Darlene Jean (Shoney) Adams of Atlantic, Iowa in 1946. The couple had two sons, Michael and David.

Preceding him in death were his father, Harley Edgerton; his son, Michael Edgerton; and his brother, Dr. Arley Edgerton.
Survivors include his wife, Shoney; his mother, Susie Edgerton of Boone, Iowa; a son, David Edgerton of Des Moines, Iowa; a son, John Edgerton, Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of San Diego, California; one granddaughter, Amanda Edgerton; a nephew, Harley Edgerton of Warrensburg, Missouri; a niece, Mary Sue Hummel of Sidney, Iowa; as well as other relatives, friends and associates.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Cardiac Care Unit at Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa.
