Lt. Gruhn Wins His Captaincy
May 10, 1934 Monitor
Aide To Commander Of 21st Brigade is Promoted; Is Communications Officer.

Lieutenant Ernest W. Gruhn, aide de camp to Brigadier General John F. Madden, and communications officer of the 21st Brigade at Schofield Barracks, received his promotion to the grade of captain.

Captain Gruhn's home, prior to entering the service, was at Portland Oregon. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1918, and went to the Infantry School of Arms at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He graduated from the basic class and remained as an instructor, moving with the school to Ft. Benning, Georgia. In 1921 he was assigned to Ft. Gibbon, Alaska, and upon the closing of that station he transferred to Chilkoot Barracks, near Skagway.

Returning to the United States proper, he served a year at Fort Crook, Nebr., and then five years as instructor in mathematics at the U.S. Military academy. He graduated from the company officers' course at the Infantry school in 1930, just prior to assignment to the Hawaiian department.

Ernest Gruhn is the brother of our townsman Charles "Pitts" Gruhn and of August Gruhn of Manilla. He is a Manning boy, born and reared in our town. His parents occupied the residence in which Herman F. Hagedorn resides now, on Highway 46 (Highway 141 in 2020), for many years. He was admitted to West Point before his parents moved to Oregon, attended our schools and was a model pupil in all his studies.

Note: Fort William H. Seward, also known as Chilkoot Barracks and Haines Mission, is a site at Port Chilkoot in Haines Borough, Alaska, about .5 miles from the city of Haines. It was the last of a series of 11 military posts established in Alaska during the gold rush era, and was Alaska's only military facility between 1925 and 1940.
