Alvin Ferneding


Alvin, son of Frank & Rose (Schlichte) Ferneding, was inducted into the US Army at Camp Dodge, Des Moines, on August 11, 1942, with the largest contingent of men to leave Carroll County during World War II. He was attached to an Anti-Aircraft Division at various camps in the United States for two years, after which he was sent to the Pacific and stationed at Hiroshima. He received the Good Conduct Medal and Commendation Award. On February 11, 1946, he received his honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal.

TO CAMP HAAN
Carroll County soldiers continue to be sent to Camp Haan from Camp Callan, California. Private Alvin Ferneding, son of Frank Ferneding of Manning, has just been transferred. His address is Pvt. Alvin Ferneding, U.S.A., Btry. F., 507th C.A. (A.A.), Camp Haan, California.

REACHES PHILIPPINES
Cpl. Alvin Ferneding has arrived in the Philippines, according to a letter received by his wife; who makes her home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dentlinger in Manning.
Corporal Ferneding is a son of Mr, and Mrs. Frank Ferneding.

ALVIN J. FERNEDING

Alvin J. Ferneding, 83, of Templeton died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Carroll Manor.
Mass of the Christian burial will he at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton with the Rev. Dale Reiff presiding.

Lector will be Josh Schroeder. Gift bearers will be Shelby McNaught and Holly Warner. Server will be Heidi Warner. Eucharistic ministers will be Joe and Donna Kemper and John Rohe. American Legion Post No. 22 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3517 of Manning will have honor guards.

Casket bearers will be Mr. Ferneding's grandsons: Gary, Tim, Doug. Dan, Brian and John Ferneding. Honorary casket hearers will be his grandchildren: Beth Ferneding, Becky Muhlhauer, Jill Venner, Jenny Martin, Matt Schroeder, Josh Schroeder. Angie Becker, Amy Hansenclever, Abby Ferneding, Kelly Ferneding, Lance McNaught. Shelby McNaught, Holly Warner, Heidi Warner and Hannah Warner.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery at Templeton.

Visitation starts at 2:30 and a rosary will be prayed at 3 Wednesday afternoon at Twit Funeral Home in Carroll. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 Wednesday night at the funeral home.
A son of Frank and Rose (Schlichte) Ferneding, he was born Aug. 7. 1921, at Templeton and attended Sacred heart School there.
He and Rita Dentlinger were married Oct. 18, 1914, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur.
Mr. Ferneding was in the Army from 1912 to 1946, serving in the Pacific Theatre. including the Philippines and Japan.
He was a lifelong Templeton-area farmer. Mr. Ferneding was a 4-H leader in Carroll for 12 years, member of the Carroll County Extension staff for many years and a Master Swine Producer in 1962.

He also belonged to the Legion and VFW posts in Manning and Sacred Heart Parish in Templeton. He loved to play cards with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Rita, of Templeton: five sons and their wives: Lonnie and Betty Ferneding of Manning, Gene and Mary Ferneding of Carroll. Jim and Joyce Ferneding of Manning, Mike and Jean Ferneding of Manning and Mark Ferneding of Templeton: three daughters: Kay Schroeder and her husband, Steve, of Kingsley, Jane McNaught of Omaha. Neb., and Joni Warner and her husband. Mike, of Manning; 21 grandchildren: 11 great-grandchildren; a brother. Paul Ferneding, and his wife, Lillian, of Carroll; a brother-in-law Norm Dentlinger, and his wife, Katherine, of Coon Rapids: and four sisters in law: Marie Siepker and her husband George, of Audubon. Catherine Dentlinger of Halbur, Rita Dentlinger of Manning and Mary Dentlinger of Audubon.

Mr. Ferneding was preceded in death by his parents: his parents-in-law, Frank and Elizabeth Dentlinger: five brothers-in-law: Wilbur, John, Al, Ambrose and Francis Dentlinger; and two sisters-in-law: Neva and Anita Dentlinger.
