After returning home Herman resumed farm work for a time; various jobs followed.
For most of his life he was an employee of the Manning American Legion. For seventy years
Herman maintained a membership in that organization which was dear to his heart.
Many times he was privileged to attend their national conventions.
Herman became a member of the Lutheran church in 1978 when he was baptized and
confirmed at Zion by the late Pastor E. F. Heinicke. Herman moved to the Manning Plaza
in 1986. He passed away there on Wednesday, June 10, 1992 at the age of 96 years, 8
months, and 5 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by two brothers: Johnny in
childhood, and Emil; and by three sisters: Sophia Rothfolk, Ida Kusel, and Clara Cox.
A sister, Laura Alwill, of Manning survives, as well as many nieces and nephews, other
relatives, and friends.

HERMAN GRAU Herman Grau was born October 5, 1895 in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa. He was one of seven children of August and Mary Hansen Grau. Herman attended rural schools in Lincoln Township, Audubon County and later in Ewoldt Township when his family moved to Carroll County in 1907. As a young man Herman worked on the farm with his brother, Emil until he was called to military duty in 1918, his being the first name drawn for service from the Manning area.
