Arthur Max, son of William and Alma Jansen Gruhn, was born January 21, 1910, in Audubon County, Iowa. Arthur attended rural schools in Carroll County near Manning. Following his schooling, he farmed with his father and brother in the Manning area and then near Irwin.

In 1942, Arthur was inducted in to the United States Army and served with the 40th Engineers in Europe.
After he was honorably discharged in October of 1945
, Arthur continued farming with his family and in 1949, they moved to the farm on the east edge of Manning. He then worked as a mechanic for Knudsen Implement and later was associated with Manning Implement. In 1957, he took over the family farm and continued farming.
On September 14, 1968, Arthur was united in marriage with Carol Paulsen at the Battle Creek Presbyterian Church. Arthur and Carol lived on the family farm. Arthur retired in 1991, and in June 1998, they moved to Willow Creek Apartments.

Arthur enjoyed working with his hands, especially woodworking and anything mechanical. On January 21, 2000, Arthur died suddenly and unexpectedly on his 90th birthday at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning. Besides his parents, Arthur is preceded in death by a brother Lester Gruhn and a sister Leona Dammann.
He is survived by his wife Carol Gruhn of Manning, a sister-in-law Lucile Fries of Ida Grove, and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
