Herbert Fred Boock was born to Fred Christian Boock and Margaretha Catherine Peters in Flandreau, South Dakota. Herb's family moved to Manning, Iowa when he was a boy and he graduated from Manning High School.

On September 10, 1941, he was united in marriage to Edith Wilma McKee. They were married in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They were married fifty-five years.

Herb moved to Des Moines in 1938 and worked at Iowa Packing Company until going in the U.S. Army in October of 1941. Herb served in the armed services for four years. He received his basic training at Aberdeen, Maryland. Edith joined him soon after Pearl Harbor. Their son Frank was born while they lived in Maryland. The three of them were cozy in a 19 foot house trailer. When Herb was shipped to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, Edith moved back to Des Moines. Their daughter, Barbara, was born while Herb was in Alaska.

After being discharged from the service, Herb went back to Iowa Packing Company for a few weeks before going to work for Bee Line Axle Service where he did front end alignment on automobiles. After five years, he went to work for a Ford dealer. His boss said he was the best front end man in the state. After the dealership closed, Herb bought a service station and did alignment work and auto repair. After working in several stations for a number of years, Herb took a job as auto body repairman for the U.S. Post Office. He became the only body repairman for western Iowa. Herb worked for the post office until his retirement in 1980.

Herb was a member of the Za Ga Zig Shrine for many years. He was an active member of the Legion of Honor and had many friends through the Shrine. Through the years, Herb went on several trips with the Shrine and marched in numerous parades as a Legion of Honor member.

Herb loved to travel. He, Edith and their children traveled to 48 states. Herb and Edith also traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, the Caribbean and many other places.

Herb also loved people. He was the kind of person who would walk up to a stranger and start a conversation. He had a kind heart and helped people his whole life. When he was a boy, he fixed bicycles for other children. In later years, he drove people who didn't have transportation to get whatever they needed.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Edith, in February 1997; a son H. (Herbert) Frank in July 1995, daughter Barbara Ann McCormick in September 1973, an infant daughter Carol Joyce in October 1943, a brother Albert in November 1997.

Herb is survived by daughter-in-law Cynthia of Mequon, Wisconsin; grandson Michael and wife, Kristin, of Cleveland Hts., Ohio; granddaughter Sherry Kovaleski and husband, William, of Calumet, Michigan; grandson Brent Boock of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; grandson Darin McCormick of St. Petersburg, Florida; great-granddaughters Madison Boock and Lilli Kovaleski; sister Betty Flanagan of Grand Rapids, Michigan; sister-in-law Margaret Strecker; brother-in-law John Flanagan; many cousins including Florence Genzen and Edna Kaspersen, who were as close to him as brothers and sisters, and many nieces and nephews.
