HARRY "CHARLIE" GRUHN

Harry Karl, son of William and Dorothea (Klautke) Gruhn, was born September 24, 1895, near Kirkman, Iowa. He attended rural schools.

On July 26, 1918, Charlie enlisted in the Army of the United States and he received his honorable discharge on December 30, 1918.

Before and after his time in the service he farmed with his father and worked as a hired hand on area farms. On December 5, 1923, Charlie was united in marriage with Wilhelmina Meggers. They farmed east of Manning until they moved to Manning in 1963.

Charlie's wife died on November 8, 1968.

During his lifetime Charlie was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and at one time was a member of the American Legion. While living on the farm he was director of the rural school in his area. Charlie enjoyed fishing and playing cards in his spare time.

After having suffered a stroke, Charlie moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in December of 1978. He died there on Tuesday, July 3, 1990, at the age of 94 years, 9 months, and 9 days.

Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents and by the following brothers and sisters: William Gruhn, Jr.; Augusta Lamp; Fred Gruhn; Dora Struve; Paul Gruhn; and Max Gruhn.

Survivors include his children: Wilma Wolfe, of Manning; Jeanette and her husband, Norman Meyer, of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Delton Gruhn and his wife, Janet, of Manning; and Marlyn and her husband, Charles Fielweber, of Manning; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Elvira Meggers, of Westside; the following brothers and sisters-in-law: Mrs. Luella Gruhn, of Manning; Herb Rowedder, of Manning; and Bill and Anna Fries, of Ida Grove; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Harry "Charlie" Gruhn, 94, of Manning died Tuesday, July 3 1990, at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 6, at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, with the Rev. Robert Riggert officiating.

Burial will be at the Manning City Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Robert Meeves, Daryle Rowedder, Duane Meggers, Gary Gruhn, Larry Genzen, and Russ Spies.

Visitation will begin after 3:30 p.m. today at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.
