Manning Still Like Home
Mr. Louis H. Heckman one of the Monitor readers at Fort Des Moines, sends his greetings as
follows, "The Monitor is a regular visitor at our home every week, and we look forward to
its coming. Manning still seems like home to us as my wife and I were both residents
there from the early days of the town. We are now very busy getting lots of mail for the 5th
cavalry that comes next month from the Philippines Islands. There will be three full train loads of them in three
squadrons. The rest of the second cavalry leave this month for the Philippines. Wishing
you and the people of Manning a prosperous New Year, I beg to remain,
Yours very truly,
L.H. Heckman.
