Herman was educated in Manning schools. He was the son of Hans C. Claussen and Magdalena (Buhman) Claussen, who immigrated to Manning, IA, area from Dellstadt, Germany in 1884. He was the 7th of 9 children, four of whom served in WWI, Bill, Herman, Harry and Herbert. Herman was wounded in a battle in Ardennes, France. He was riding a horse pulling a wagon hauling ammunition. A shell came in killing his horse. The horse fell on his leg. He was taken to a French Military Hospital. The doctors there removed shrapnel from his leg. His eardrum was broken. Later, he met his future wife while billeted in Dingenheim, Germany area during WWI Army of Occupation. In Manning, he ran a dray and latter trucking business, Claussen Transfer, for many years before moving to Winterset, IA, in 1945. He farmed there before retiring to Ankeny, IA, in 1960.
