Serial Number 37752284; Enlisted Fort Leavenworth, Kansas September 16, 1944; Private

Ronnie was drafted into the U. S. Army in September 1944. He saw action in the South Pacific, Philippines and Japan and was a member of General MacArthur's honor guard. He was the 1963 commander of V.F.W. Post 3517 and a member of the American Legion Post 22. Private First Class Hiatt was honorably discharged in 1946.

Ronald Ray, son of Roy and Edna Mohr Hiatt, was born May 29, 1926, at Carroll, Iowa. He lived with his family in Irwin and attended schools there. Just before his senior year in high school in 1944, the family moved to Manning and Ronnie was drafted into the United States Army. During World War 11, he served in the Philippines and was a member of General MacArthur's honor guard.
After his honorable discharge in 1946,
he returned to Manning where he worked for Dultmeier Manufacturing. On October 4, 1949, Ronnie was united in marriage with Ruth Brady at Sacred Heart Church in Manning. They made their home in Manning and Ronnie started working in the grocery business, eventually becoming part-owner of Thrifty Food.
He retired in 1995. Ronnie was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish, Veterans of Foreign Wars where he was a past commander, American Legion, Community Chest Board, and a former member of the Manning Volunteer Fire Department. Ronnie was honored as Silver Years King during Manning's Centennial in 1981. He thoroughly enjoyed card playing, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Ronnie suffered a heart attack in Manning in late August of 1997. Because of complications following heart surgery, he died at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, on Friday, September 19, 1997, at the age of 71 years, 3 months, and 21 days.

Manager of Council Oak store in Manning seven years, Ronnie Hiatt, 33, was born here and educated at Irwin.

Ronnie's first job was with the Irwin Produce and then he worked with Heinz Brandt Construction company before being employed by Council Oak in 1947. He was named manager of the store in December 1952.

Entering the army in September 1944, Ronnie saw action in the South Pacific, Philippines and Japan. He is at present senior vice commander of the VFW post, belongs to the American Legion, Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer fire department. He lists his hobbies as hunting, fishing and bowling.

Ronnie and his wife, Ruth, have two children, Paul 9 and Mary Jo 7. The family belongs to Sacred Heart Catholic church.
