Harry Enlisted in the US Army in 1918 and was discharged the fall of 1919.
He served about one year after Armistice helping to repair roads in France that were destroyed by war.
Harry was promoted to Sergeant of the 55th Engineers.

He was born in Manning in 1894 and died in 1982.
He married Fredda Haase in Zearing, Iowa on June of 1927.
They have one son Roger Hinz born in 1938.

Fredda (born 1904) is living in the Hinz family home in Manning with her son Roger (dated January 30, 2002).

HARRY HINZ
Harry, son of Herman and Emma (Barten) Hinz was born October 23, 1894, near Manning, Iowa. He was educated in the Manning schools. After high school he began working in the First National Bank in Manning for about a year before entering the Army on February 26, 1918. He served with the 55th Engineers in France and remained there after the Armistice to help with the rebuilding of roads until his discharge on July 11, 1919. Upon returning to Manning he went back to the bank where he worked until his retirement in 1965. He also had a small insurance business writing for the St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company which he continued for several years after his retirement.

He was united in marriage with Fredda Haase on June 20, 1927.

Harry served as the treasurer for the City of Manning for many years until he gave up that job to serve for many additional years on the Manning City Council. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, American Legion, masonic Lodge, and Eastern Star.

Harry had been a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home for one year before his death there Wednesday, September 1, 1982, at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 8 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Frank and Louis, and by three sisters, two in childhood and Rose Paine of Eagle Grove.

Harry is survived by his wife, Fredda, of Manning, and by one son, Roger, also of Manning. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Annette Timmerman, Manning, and Elsie, Mrs. Lorne Groff, Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as by nieces, nephews, & other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 4, 1982, 1:30 p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. Officiating was the Reverend Dennis Johnson of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. Organist was Odessa Wycoff, Ray Pratt was vocalist. Interment was in Manning Cemetery with Lester Wiese, Dick Crandall, Keith Kelderman, Art Rix, Ray Sander and Charles Hughes as casketbearers.

Military honors were by American Legion Post 22 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517, Manning.


Harry Hinz is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
