BERNHARDT HENRY HOLLANDER (SLICK)
Bernhardt Henry Hollander (Slick) was born September 29, 1920, the son of Carsten and Greda Odefy Hollander. He died Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of eighty-two.
Slick was born in Denison, Iowa and received his education in the Denison Community School. He was baptized in Christ on October 24, 1920 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. Freese and later confirmed there on March 25, 1934.

In 1942, Slick was united in marriage to Vergene Bohnsack (MHS 1942) in Maryville, Missouri. On November 4, 1942 Slick entered the United States Army Air Force, serving with the 207th AAF Base Unit in England. He received his honorable discharge on November 6, 1945 and returned home to Manning, where he worked at the Manning Creamery for several years. The couple moved to Denison, where they owned and operated the Rex Billiards. They later moved to Greenfield, where they owned and operated a grocery store for eight years. Then he worked at the Office in Auburn and later the Sportsman Lounge in Ida Grove. They retired and moved to Denison in 1983. The couple were honored to celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary in 2002.
Slick was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, who was always there when needed for anyone. He enjoyed gardening, eating Lemon Meringue Pie, spending time with his family and playing Euchre. In his leisure time, Slick enjoyed hunting squirrels, rabbits, and occasionally pheasants and fishing was a must!

Slick was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, one son, Bernie Hollander, one brother, Walter Hollander and a brother-in-law, Louis Bohnsack. Survivors include his wife, Vergene of Denison; one son, Ron Hollander and his wife, Cheryl of Bellevue, Nebraska; four daughters, Joan Newell and her husband, Wayne of Greenfield; Lynn Powell and her friend, Lenny Mash of Ankeny; Robin Fume and her husband, Craig of Denison; Tracey Bettin and her husband, Tal of Odebolt; sixteen grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren; one brother, Raymond Hollander and his wife, Madona of Omaha; one sister, Anna May Doody of Littleton, Colorado; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 25, 2003, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Diane Fume provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Eldon Hardekopf as he sang "The Lord's Prayer", and "On Eagle's Wings", and for the congregational hymns "Just as I Am, Without One Plea", and "Be Still, My Soul".
Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Cheryl Hollander, Craig Fume, Wayne Newell, Tal Bettin, and Lenny Mash. Those serving as pallbearers were: Braden Hollander, Ron Hollander, Dylan Bettin, Matt Powell, Jason Hollander, Tyson Bettin, and Justin Bettin.

Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post No. 8 of Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
