Harold Dean, son of Clarence and Mabel Tuel Hupp, was born October 7, 1926, near Coon Rapids, Iowa. Dean attended country school and then graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1944. On February 15, 1945, Dean entered the United States Army. Attaining the rank of Private First Class, he served with the 25th Infantry Division in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged on July 9, 1946.

In June of 1951, Dean was united in marriage with Naomi Rinehart. Three daughters were born to this union. They lived in the Manning area where he worked for George Opperman on the dairy farm. In 1964 they moved to Aspinwall and he started working for Aspinwall Coop.

On August 19, 1978, Dean was united in marriage with Margaret (Hoffman) Brincks at Carroll. They made their home in Aspinwall where Dean continued to work at the coop retiring in 1989.

Dean was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. He was a member of the American Legion Post 22 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517.

Dean started having heart trouble in 1983 and had by-pass surgery in 1997. About a year later his health began to deteriorate and he suffered a stroke in December of 1999. Dean became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home shortly before his death there on Sunday, November 12, 2000, at the age of 74 years, 1 month, and 5 days.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson Tim Heller; brother, in infancy; and Uncle Paul Tuel.

Dean is survived by his wife Marge Hupp of Aspinwall; three daughters: Patty Bornhoft of Manilla; Peggy Heller of Carroll; and Deanna Hupp of Omaha, Nebraska; five step-children: David Brincks of Thor; Michael Brincks and wife Joyce of Madrid; Cindy and husband William Becker of Carroll; Neil Brincks of Garland, Texas; and Jeffrey Brincks and wife Linda of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-granddaughters; sister Wanda and her husband Val Tuel of Coon Rapids; brother-in-law LaVern Hoffman and wife Katie of Carroll; sister-in-law Ruth Hoffman of Spencer; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
