John P. Dentlinger
1973-74 American Legion Commander


John was on the U.S.S. Roberts D.E. 749 which was escort of large carriers. His tour of duty was in the Pacific.
Some of their duties were anti-aircraft and submarine patrol, picking up of "downed" pilots and removing exploding mines in the China Sea. He was a part of the battle of Okinawa and took occupation troops to Japan.
John received various medals and battle stars. He was Quarter Master 2nd Class when he received his honorable discharge April 13, 1946.

John was married to Rita Nees on December 20, 1945. They have lived in the Manning area since 1963. They have seven children: Raymond of Storm Lake, IA.; Eileen Dentlinger; Karen, Mrs. Don Landrie; Valerie, Mrs. Dave Sedlacek of Omaha, NE.; Pam, Mrs. Doug Hicks of Council Bluffs, IA.; Peg of San Diego, CA. and John F. "Jack" of Manning.

The Dentlinger children graduated from the Manning School system.
Raymond and John F. also served in the Military.

John P. Dentlinger
John Philip, son of Frank and Elizabeth Drees Dentlinger, was born June 5, 1921, near Halbur, Iowa, where he grew up and attended school. Following his schooling, he worked on farms in the area.

On December 13, 1943, John entered the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific aboard the USS Roberts during World War II.

On December 20, 1945, John was united in marriage with Rita Nees at Mount Carmel. Seven children were born to this union. Following John's honorable discharge on April 13, 1946, he and Rita farmed near Everly, Glidden and Manning. He then owned and operated Gambles Hardware Store in Manning and then worked at L.R. Nelson Corporation until retiring when the plant closed in the spring of 1983.

John was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning and the Knights of Columbus. He was also active in the American Legion, holding a number of offices including County Commander and Post-commander in Glidden and Manning. He was a past-member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and enjoyed being a 4-H leader in Glidden for a number of years.

On June 7, 2001, John became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, Iowa, where he died on Friday, November 15, 2002, at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 10 days.

Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by a son-in-law Robert Flower; brothers: Wilbert, Alphonse, Francis and Ambrose Dentlinger; and a sister Anita Dentlinger.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rita Dentlinger of Manning; seven children: Raymond Dentlinger and wife Joleen of Storm Lake; Eileen Dentlinger of Omaha; Karen and husband Donol Landrie of Omaha; Margaret Dentlinger of Rockford, IL; John F. Dentlinger and wife Mary of Manning; Pamela and husband Douglas Hicks of Council Bluffs; Valerie and husband David Sedlacek of Omaha; 10 grandchildren: Michael and Richard Landrie; Matthew Dentlinger; Melissa and Scan Hicks; Anna, Kate and Jacob Dentlinger; Rachel and Makayla Sedlacek; a great grandson Trent Landrie; two sisters: Rita and husband Alvin Ferneding of Templeton; Marie and husband George Siepker of Gray; a brother Norman Dentlinger and wife Katherine of Coon Rapids; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
