James Matthew McGrane

James, son of John and Katherine McGrane, enlisted in the Army in 1917. For two years he served as a cook, receiving his discharge from Camp Tunston, Kansas, in October of 1919.

James J. McGrane, son of Mr. and Mrs. James McGrane of Arcadia, who is with the U.S. Coast Guard, has been transferred from Front Royal, Virginia, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and advanced from seaman, second class, to specialist, third class. His new address is: James J. McGrane 573-432 Sp. (D.) 3/c, U.S.C.G. Det. U.S. Naval Air Base, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.


James McGrane
James Matthew McGrane died Wednesday, March 1, 1995, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll at the age of 104. Jim was born on January 28, 1891, at Halbur, Iowa, the son of John and Catherine (Fitzhenry) McGrane.

He entered the United States Army in October 1917 and served during World War I. He was honorably discharged in March 1919.

He married Margaret Dalton on January 28, 1920, at St. Ann Church in Vail, Iowa. The couple made their home on the McGrane farm three miles west of Halbur until 1948 when they retired from farming and moved to Carroll.

Margaret died in January of 1985. Jim was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and was honored as a member of the Iowa Health Care Association Century Club. He had been a resident of the Carroll Health Center since May of 1991.

He is survived by his sons, James J. McGrane and Cletus (Donna) McGrane; grandchildren Steven McGrane, Julie Williams, Lori Seidl, Cindy McGrane, James "Skip" McGrane, and David McGrane; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and four sisters.
