John Schroeder

1944-45 American Legion Commander

John's dad, Jasper Schroeder was born in Qualmsteadt, Holstein, Germany, where he spent his boyhood. After serving in the 5th Company of the Thueringische Infantry Regiment No. 31 in Altona for 2 years from 1870 to 1878, he gained his honorable discharge from the army and forth-with set sail for America. He arrived at Westside, Iowa, May 1, 1886.

J.J. Schroeder Dies; Leader In Soil Conservation
John James Schroeder, prominent Manning farmer and well-known throughout Carroll County for his work in soil conservation, died at his home in Manning at 2 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 25, 1952. He would have been 58 years old July 2, 1952.

He had been ill since Monday.

Funeral services will be held at the Ohde Funeral home here at 2 p.m. Friday, the Rev. Harlan Kruse officiating. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.

Masonic services will be conducted by the Manning lodge and military rites will be conducted by the Emil Ewoldt Post 22, American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Ida) Joens, Mrs. Alfred (Anita) Nulle and Mrs. William (Edna) Vollstedt, all of Manning, and one brother, Julius, of Manning.

Mr. Schroeder was born in Washington Township July 2, 1894.

He was son of the late Jasper and Alwine (Sievers) Schroeder.

He moved to Manning three years ago. He was a past master of the Masonic lodge and a former commander of the Ewoldt Legion post.

Mr. Schroeder operated a 320-acre farm in Washington Township with his brother, Julius.

He was active in AAA and soil conservation work in Carroll County. Mr. Schroeder was also a director of the Western Iowa Sportsman's Association.

He was elected AAA committeeman from Washington Township in 1938, and was named chairman in 1940, a position he held at the time of his death. He served as corn loan inspector for the AAA for Ewoldt and Washington Townships in 1939.

Mr. Schroeder was elected district soil conservation commissioner for Carroll County when the district was established in December 1944. He served a six-year term and was re-elected to another six-year term in January 1951.

He served as chairman of the commission in 1949 and 1950.

The county PMA and Soil Conservation service offices in Carroll will be closed during the services Friday afternoon.
