JAMES LOUIS BAILEY

James L. Bailey, 85, died Sunday, January 16, 1983, in a Great Falls Nursing Home. Services are today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairfield with Rev. Duane Thompson officiating.

Ushers are Vern LaValley and Edwin Weishaar.

Pallbearers are Ray and Robert C. Carlson, Gus B. Field, Lloyd Hughes, Arthur and Clarence Schmidt.

Interment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Fairfield, Montana, with military honors by the Fairfield Post 80, American Legion.

Bailey was born February 16, 1897, at Manning, Iowa, son of Henry and Margaret Bailey. He grew up in Manning and worked on farms in the area. Later he migrated to Sidney, Nebraska, where he also did farm work and in 1918 he joined the U.S. Navy. He received training at the Great Lakes, Illinois, Naval Training Center and served on submarines. When he was discharged in 1920, he returned to Nebraska and farm work. Between 1920 and 1930 he moved to Turner, northeast of Havre and farmed. On January 1, 1930, he married Helen Hinrichs at Santa Rosa, California, and they made their home in Turner. In 1940, they homesteaded 10 miles east of Fairfield and had lived there since. They received their mail from Fort Shaw.

He was a past commander of American Legion at both Turner and Fairfield and at the time of his death was historian for the Fairfield Post.

He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and a past chairman of the Crowe School Board.

His hobbies were fishing, hunting, gardening, and wood carving.

Survivors include the widow, one daughter, Mrs. Lewis (Avis) Manceau, Fort Shaw, one brother, Darrell, and two sisters, Mrs. Edith White and Mrs. Grace Will, all of Eureka, California.
