Services for Urban "John" Janning, 71 of Carroll and Lake View, Iowa who died of cancer March 6, 1994, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll were Wednesday, March 9 at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. Rev. Robert Gralapp and Rev. Leo Riesberg officiated. Interment was in Mt. Oliver Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll and Manning American Legion and the Manning Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Urban "John" Janning was born December 17, 1922, at Mt. Carmel, Iowa to Bernard and Mary (Lammers) Janning. He spent his younger years in the Mt. Carmel community and attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Schools.

He entered the United States Army in January 1943 and served during World War II in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He was honorably discharged in February, 1946.

On May 5, 1947, he married Virginia Hacker at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton, Iowa. They made their home in Manning, Iowa. In 1955, they moved to Carroll.

In 1962, the Jannings purchased the Club 30 east of Carroll and in 1966, they built the Pin Oaks Restaurant in Carroll which they owned and operated until their retirement in 1983.

He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll and a member of the Carroll Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Carroll and Manning American Legions and a lifetime member of the Manning V.F.W. and the Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara Ann in infancy; a brother, Edward Janning and four sisters, Martha Hoffmann, Veronica Olerich, Adeline Authier and Leona Venteicher.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Carroll; sons and daughters-in -law, Dennis and Diane Janning of Carroll; Gary and Joyce Janning of Blair and James Janning of Aurora, Colorado; three grandchildren, Natalie Janning of Carroll and Mark Janning and Kristan Janning, both of Blair; a sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Paul Heue of Vail, Iowa; brothers-in-law and their wives, Ed and Ruth Hacker of Marble Falls, Texas; Maurice and Mary Agnes Hacker of Bettendork, Iowa; Clifford and Anna Mae Hacker of Templeton and Clarence Olerich of Lake View, Iowa; and sisters-in-law and their husbands, Harriet and Robert McDonald of Carroll and Helen Lee and Leslie David of Templeton.
