Joseph was inducted into the service on February 26, 1918, in Carroll, Iowa. He was sent to Camp Dodge, Des Moines, and was attached to Company D, 129th Infantry, leaving the States for foreign duty on May 10, 1918. While overseas he served at Verdun and the St. Michael sector at Argonne Forest.
Joseph was awarded the Citation Victory Medal and the Purple Heart and received his discharge on May 12, 1919.
