Members of the Ceremonies Team of Emil Ewoldt Post honored John Joens, WWI veteran at the American Legion Hall December, 29. Mr. Joens has been a member of the present and past teams for 47 years and is retiring from it.

JOHN JOENS

John Alwein, son of Hans and Marie (Hansen) Joens, was born November 26, 1890, near Westside. He attended the rural schools near his home and was united in marriage with Lena Schroeder on October 24, 1917, at Carroll.

Several months later he was inducted into the United States Army, serving overseas. Following his discharge John and Lena lived near Westside a short while, then farmed near Halbur for 40 years. They moved to Manning in 1930 where John was janitor at the Manning grade school for 23 years, retiring in 1956. John has been in failing health for the past 10 years and died suddenly at his home early Thursday morning, January 27, 1977, at the age of 86 years, 2 months, and one day.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Arlene, by his parents, by one sister, Mrs. Linda Denton by three brothers, Albert, Walter and Henry.

He is survived by his wife, Lena, by one sister, Mrs. Hilda Smith, Brush, Colorado, and by many nieces and nephews.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, the American Legion Post of Manning, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Manning.

Funeral services were Saturday, January 29 at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Pastor Edward F. Heinicke, officiating. Interment was in Hayes Township Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lewis W. Schroeder, Merlin Schroeder, Harold Joens, Clifford Joens, Larry Rix, and Allen Rix.
