In Quartermaster School
Just a note to let you know my new address.
I have been transferred to Quartermaster school here at Farragut. I would like to thank you and the Legion for the Monitor. It's sure good to go back to the barracks in the evening and enjoy reading the hometown paper and hearing where a lot of the fellows are.
I get to see Joe Stein over here at the school barber shop.
He is on duty two nights a week. Sincerely yours, Edwin Johnson, S 2/c.

Manning Monitor articles ------ 1945

Aboard a Destroyer in the Pacific.
Recreation to Ed. Johnson used to be an afternoon round of golf on the Manning course. Now it is an infrequent hour or two on an island beach, combating boredom with a ration of half a dozen cans of beer.

The 27-year-old former assistant manager of the Brown-McDonald department store has been in the Pacific since early this year, following graduation from navigation school at Farragut, Idaho.

He observed his first year in the Navy by undergoing an air attack by Japan-based planes off Nansei Shoto.
Johnson's wife and two children live at Manning.

WITH FOURTH FLEET ENTERING JAPAN BAY
ABOARD THE USS McDERMUT
Edwin Johnson, Q. M. 3-e, of Manning, witnessed the entrance of the fourth fleet into Japan's Ominato bay on the tip of northern Honshu while serving aboard this destroyer.
The final phase of the war found the destroyer rescuing downed pilots off Okinawa and aiding in the bombardment of the Japanese home islands.
With part of the ninth fleet she took part in what was probably the last shore bombardment of the war ---- the shelling of Suribachi.

Eddie Johnson Back At Old Job Here
