From the 1981 Manning Centennial book and the memoirs of Clara Kasperbauer: John S. Kasperbauer was born near Templeton March 28, 1896, a son of Frank Xavier and Franciska (Pfeffer) Kasperbauer. Frank, Francis, and their three oldest children immigrated from Pastersdorf, Germany, in 1889.

John attended Sacred Heart School in Templeton and served overseas in World War I in the U.S. Army. John was serving on the front line duty when the Armistice was signed November 11, 1918. John was discharged in June 1919. Two brothers of John also served, Sylvester died on board a ship heading to France, and Herman served on the front line.

John married Clara Balk, daughter of Mike and Catherine (Venteicher) Balk of Willey, on January 10, 1928. March 1, 1928, John and Clara moved to a farm 2 3/4 miles north of Manning where they resided until John's death on November 26, 1976. John was a member of the American Legion and Past Commander of the VFW. The couple had nine children and were members of Sacred Heart Church in Manning. All nine children received their grade school education in a one-room country school two miles north of Manning and graduated from Manning High School: Mike, Marian Fitzsimmons, Patty Sheets, Larry, Lt. Colonel James Kasperbauer, Lt. Colonel Gerald Kasperbauer, Major Patrick Kasperbauer, Lonnie, Linda Johanson.


JOHN S. KASPERBAUER
John S. Kasperbauer was born March 28, 1896 near Templeton, to Frank X. and Frances (Pfeffer) Kasperbauer.

He attended schools at Sacred Heart School of Templeton. When he became a young man, he served overseas in World War One.

On January 10, 1928, he married Clara Balk and they had farmed north of Manning since that time. John was in failing health the last year and entered the Manning General Hospital where he died a week later on Friday, November 26, 1976, at the age of 80 years, 7 months, and 28 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and seven brothers.

He is survived by his wife Clara and the following children; Dr. Michael Kasperbauer, Lexington, Kentucky, Marion, Mrs. Fred Fitzsimmons, Vail; Patty, Mrs. Wallace Sheets, Cedar Rapids, Dr. Larry Kasperbauer, Agana, Guam, Major James C. Kasperbauer, Andrews, AF Base, Maryland; Lt. Col. Gerald Kasperbauer, Randolph, AFB, Texas; Linda, Mrs. Steven Johanson, Forest City, Lonnie Kasperbauer, Des Moines, and by 27 grandchildren, two brothers, Herman Kasperbauer, Dedham and Fred Kasperbauer, Carroll, also one sister, Mrs. Michael Hayes, Omaha, Nebraska. John was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Manning, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3517, Manning, of which he had served as commander and American Legion Post No. 22, Manning.

Mass of Resurrection was held Monday, October 29, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Manning with celebrant Rev. Louis Meyer O.S.B.

Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery of Manning.

Military honors were performed by Manning VFW and American Legion Posts.

The Rosary was prayed on Sat. at 8:30 p.m. and on Sun. at 8:00p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home. A Bible Service was held on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
