Services for Loyd Borkowski were held Friday, June 27, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Iowa. Officiating was Pastor Daniel Vogel. Congregational hymns included "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," and "God Bless America" with Fern Jensen, organist.
Interment was at Manning Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Kari Borkowski, Amy Borkowski, Lucas Borkowski, Travis Borkowski, Marcus Borkowski, Adam Musfeldt, Aaron Musfeldt, and Lisa Artherholt.

Military Honors: American Legion Post 22, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517, Manning, Iowa.

Loyd Elmer, son of Paul and Ida (Ross) Borkowski, was born December 17, 1914 in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa. He was baptized June 13, 1915 at Trinity Lutheran Church near Audubon and confirmed May 1, 1932 at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Loyd attended rural school in Lincoln Township at Trinity Lutheran Church and Star School. He then worked on the family farm.

On May 28, 1941, Loyd entered the United States Army and served as a mechanic at numerous stateside locations. On November 8, 1945, he received his honorable discharge.

May 8, 1943, Loyd was united in marriage with Esther Dora Bertha Stoelk by Pastor Enge at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Four children were born to this union. Lloyd worked at Frahm Garage for a short time before they started farming various places around Irwin, Audubon, and Boma. In 1961 they moved to a farm southeast of Manning and farmed there until they semi-retired and moved into Manning in 1982. Loyd still enjoyed helping on the farm, operating the combine and other machinery well into his 80's.

Loyd was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion of which he was a past commander, Lifetime Member of the Disabled American Veterans Buena Vista 33, and the Carroll County Farm Bureau of which he served on the Board of Directors.

June 16, 2003, Loyd entered Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, Iowa, following a period of declining health. He died there Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at the age of 88 years, six months, and eight days.

Besides his parents, Loyd was preceded in death by a sister Alverda and husband Jack Rudd; brothers-in-law Eddie Vogel and Orville Stoelk; a sister-in-law, Dorothy and husband Duane Hillson.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Esther Borkowski of Manning; four children: Janice and husband Bruce Artherholt of Red Oak; Lyle Borkowski and wife Marlene of Manning; Lenus Borkowski and wife Kristie of Manning; JoAnn and husband Roger Musfeldt of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren: Lisa Artherholt; Kari and Amy Borkowski; Lucas, Travis and Marcus Borkowski; Adam and Aaron Musfeldt; a sister Lois Vogel of Kansas City, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Completes Diesel Tank Course
The Army Ordnance Department announces that S-S Loyd E. Borkowski of Manning has completed specialists course on Diesel; Tank Engines at the Flint Section of the Ordnance School, conducted at General Motors Institute, Flint, Mich., in cooperation with the Detroit Diesel Engine Div. of General Motors Corp., Detroit, Mich.

Loyd was specially selected to attend this course in practical, mechanical maintenance of our Army's fighting equipment. Such courses are conducted in schools throughout the country by the Ordnance Dept. in cooperation with the manufacturers.
This training program is headed by Brig. Gen. H. R. Kutz, Chief of Military Training Division and assist to Maj. Gen. Levin H. Campbell, Jr., the Chief of Ordnance.
The participation of the former motor car manufacturer in this training of ordnance soldiers has been welcomed by General Kutz in order to make certain that the vehicles and weapons manufactured by them are properly serviced in the various theaters of war.
Loyd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Borkowski.

In Uniform 4 1/2 Years, L. Borkowski Home
After serving in the army four years, five months and 11 days, Loyd Borkowski of near Manning, has returned home and is back on the farm.
Loyd served the entire time within the boundaries of the United States and received his discharge two weeks ago.
