Following his schooling, Leander worked on a local farm until December of 1952 when he entered the United States Army. He served during the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of Corporal and receiving his honorable discharge in December of 1954.

Leander and Eileen farmed in the Halbur area until 1967 when they moved to a farm they had purchased southwest of Manning. They farmed there until 1989 when they moved into Manning. After his retirement from farming, Leander kept very busy working part-time at Struve Labs and Independent Repair. He also did a lot of woodwork for his family and others.
