Family remembrances: Louie worked in the kitchen at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and with a hospital in France where he drove a horse-drawn ambulance.
He was discharged and returned home after the war and married Marie Tollgaard.
Marie later told family members that Louie didn't tell her he was leaving for the Army until the night before he left.
Date of Birth: April 21, 1895 BEARERS Walter Hammer, Russell Anderson, Claire Headrick, Vernon Kroeger, Gerald Martinson, Virtus Schroeder Louie H. Hammer, son of Henry and Louise (Kruse) Hammer was born on April 21, 1895, at Manning, IA. He started his education here and moved to Moody County with his parents in 1911. He farmed with his father and entered the Army during World War I. After his discharge he returned to Moody County. He was married to Marie Tollgaard on Sept. 24, 1919, and they continued to farm until 1946 when the family moved into Flandreau. In 1948 he started working at the DX gas and bulk station, retiring in 1964. Afterwards he was custodian at Our Savior's Lutheran church for many years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, was a former church trustee, and a member of the Kelly-Porter American Legion Post for 61 years. SURVIVORS |
