Durant Man After Two Car Crash at Wilton
Leonard Johannsen, 60, of Durant was fatally injured in a motor accident Tuesday afternoon about a mile east of here on Highway No. 6. He died at 3:25 p.m. at Mercy Hospital Davenport.

Johannsen's death was the second in the county Tuesday resulting from motor accidents.

Allen Hammer, 7, of route 4, had been injured fatally earlier in the day in an accident on highway No. 76.

Swerve Vehicle
According to an Iowa Highway Patrol officer who investigated the accident, Johannsen, alone in his car, was driving West on the highway when another car driven by Everett Rorick, 70, of Wilton entered the highway from a cross road in front of Johannsen, who swerved his vehicle to avoid a collision.

In so doing be became involved in a collision with another vehicle approaching from the other direction, driven by Ivan Dierdorff, 30, of Wilton, Moscow.

Woman Hurt
Dierdorff was reported to have escaped without serious injuries. Mrs. Ernest Gobel, Moscow, passenger in the car, suffered head cuts and was taken to Muscatine General Hospital, where her condition today was reported as good.

Coroner Ralph Figg of Muscatine County was advised of the fatality. He reported today that because Johannsen's death occurred in Scott County, Coroner Kenneth Froeschle of that county would conduct an investigation and arrange an inquest if it is considered necessary.

Funeral Saturday
Johannsen's body was taken to the Runge Mortuary, Davenport, where funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Fred J. Rolf of Rock Island at 1 p.m., Saturday. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Johannsen was born April 11, 1897, at Manning, Iowa. He married Alvena Martens November 28, 1922, at Davenport.

He was a member of the Walcott American Legion Post, and the Masonic Lodge at Wilton.

Survivors include his widow, three daughters, Miss Della Johannsen of Davenport, Mrs. Henry Kroeger and Mrs. James Paustian, both of Durant, a son, William Johannsen of Durant; two sisters, Mrs. Gilbert Martens and Mrs. William Schlapkohl, both of Durant; and four brothers, Herbert of Durant, Edwin of Wilton, Albert of Modesto, California; and Harvey, of Wisconsin. He is also survived by six grandchildren.

Crash Fatal To Durant Resident
Leonard C. Johannsen, 60, of Durant, was fatally injured Tuesday afternoon in a head-on collision on Highway 6 about a mile east of Wilton.

Johannsen died at 3:25 p.m., about an hour after he was taken to Mercy Hospital in Davenport.

A passenger in the other car, Mrs. Ernest Goebel, 36, of Moscow, was reported in "good" condition at Muscatine General Hospital with severe lacerations. The driver of the car, Ivan Dierdorff, 30, of Wilton Junction, escaped injury.

Iowa Highway Patrolman Al Chrystal said Johannsen, alone in his car, was driving west on the highway when another car driven by Everett Rorick, 70, of Wilton Junction, turned onto the highway.

Chrystal said Johannsen swerved to avoid a collision with Rorick's car and hit the Dierdorff car coming in the opposite direction.

Johannsen was born April 11, 1897, in Manning, Iowa, and married Alvena Martens, November 28, 1923, in Davenport.

He farmed near Wilton until 8 years ago. Recently, he had been a cement mason for Carl Schacht.

He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the Walcott American Legion Post 548, and the Wilton Lodge No. 167 A.F. & A.M.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Della Johannsen, Davenport, and Mrs. Henry Kroeger and Mrs. James Paustian, both of Durant; a son, William, Durant; two sisters, Mrs. Gilbert Martens and Mrs. William Schlapkohl, both of Durant; four brothers, Herbert of Durant; Edwin of Wilton; Albert, Modesto, California; and Harvey of Wisconsin; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Runge Chapel.

The Rev. Fred Rolf will officiate. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.
