Wesley "Gus" Lage

1921 - 2000


Wesley was drafted into the Army Air Corps in November of 1942. He trained at Sheppard Field, Texas, and served in the glider division. He was promoted to Technical Sergeant at Bowman Field, Kentucky, and was honorably discharged in February of 1946.

Wesley "Gus" Lage, 78, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Friday, March 3, 2000, at the Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly of natural causes.

Gus was born on April 2, 1921, the son of Herman and Laura Mohr Lage in Manning, Iowa. He was baptized on May 15,1921, and confirmed in April of 1934, both at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.
Gus attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Manning High School in 1938.
He worked locally until being drafted into the Army Air Corps in November of 1942. Gus served in the glider division as a T/Sgt. and was honorably discharged in February of 1946. He entered Iowa State University in 1946, and graduated in 1949, with a degree in agricultural economics. At Iowa State University, he was a founding father of Epsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Psi Lutheran Fraternity. Upon graduation, Gus was employed as a sales representative for Armour and Co. in the agriculture division.
On May 19, 1956, he was united in marriage to Audrey Moser in Le Mars, Iowa. The couple lived in the Le Mars, Storm Lake, Waterloo, Clarion, and Cedar Falls, Iowa communities until moving to Shell Rock, Iowa in 1965, when he became a sales representative with Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Company (currently CUNA Mutual).

In 1971, the couple moved to Waverly where they have lived since. Gus retired from life insurance sales on July 1, 1995.

Gus was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly and a former member of St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly.
He was also a member of the Amvet Post #79 of Waverly, American Legion Post #176 of Waverly, and Chartered Life Underwriters.

Gus is survived by his wife, Audrey of Waverly; three children and their spouses, Scott and Theresa Lage of Algona, Iowa, Lori and Dr. Philip Leeds of Jasper, Indiana, and Kent and Cindy Lage of Leawood, Kansas; six grandchildren, Kelly Lage of Algona, Iowa, Mitchel and Eric Leeds of Jasper, Indiana, and Austin, Madison and Jackson Lage of Leawood, Kansas; and one brother and his spouse, Walter and Ardith Lage of Manning, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Is Glider Mechanic
Sheppard Field, Texas-Pvt. Wesley G. Lage, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lage, Manning, has graduated from an intensive course in glider mechanics and now is prepared to blast the Axis as one of America's "commandos in overalls".
Sheppard Field, near Wichita Falls, Texas, is one of the many schools of the Army Air Forces Technical Training Command which trains the specialist technicians to maintain our mighty air armada. He is now eligible to win a rating as a corporal or sergeant and to play a vital role in a new, pioneering branch of the service gliders.
Before entering the school, he was trained at one of the basic training centers of the Army Air Forces Technical Training Command and learned to fight the Ax is with other things besides the tools of his trade.
