At a regular meeting of Emil Ewoldt Post, American Legion, the following officers were elected: Commander, Anton Mergele; vice commander, Leon Hass; finance officer, John H. Mohr; historian, Amos C. Lee; chaplain, Roy E. Cole; sergeants at arms, Joe Steen and Herman Grau; executive committee, Emil Jensen, Henry J.M. Hansen, Merlene Thompson, Albert Schoeppner, and John Schroeder.

ANTON MERGELE

Military funeral rites for Anton Mergele, 74, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 19 at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, with Rev. Robert Rushing of the Manning Presbyterian Church officiating.

Burial was in the Manning Cemetery. Casketbearers were members of the Ceremonial squads of Emil Ewoldt Post No. 22 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3517, of Manning.

Son of George and Dorothea (Heesch) Mergele, he was born September 16, 1894, at Bolivar, Missouri, and came to Iowa in 1899. He was a veteran of World War I.

He worked as a clerk in the Manning Post Office for thirty years before retiring.

Mergele was found dead in bed at his home on Wednesday morning, October 16, 1968. Unmarried, he lived alone.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and William and two sisters, Marie and Anna.

He is survived by a brother, August Mergele, Taconite, Minnesota; ten nieces and nephews.


Anton Mergele is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
