Rites on Friday For Storm Victim

Funeral services for Nicholas C. Schrum, 69, dairy farmer who died following injuries received in the August 5, 1956, storm, were held at the Ohde Funeral Home Friday afternoon, with the Rev. Douglas Steffensen of Muscatine, officiating. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery. Nephews acted as pallbearers.

Manual Lodge, AF & AM, was in charge of Masonic graveside rites, and Emil Ewoldt Post No. 22, American Legion, of military rites.

Soloists for the service were Clifford M. Johnson and Ray Pratt. Bonita (Mrs. Henry W.) Hagedorn was organist.

Mr. Schrum, son of Fred and Catherine Schrum, was born March 26, 1887, near Westside, and had lived in this vicinity all his life. He died at 3:00 p.m. at the Manning hospital August 5.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Mae; two sons, James, Fairfield; Richard, Estes Park, Colorado; five daughters, Mrs. L.F. (Lois) Knudsen, Page, Nebraska; Mrs. Larry (Lilah) Kimes, San Bernardino, California; Mrs. Max (Verna Louise) Gunnerson, Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Normal (Leona) Petersen, Des Moines; Mrs. James (Sally) Donnelly, Rome, New York. There are 12 grandchildren. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Fred Schrum; two brothers, John and W.F. Schrum of Manning; two sisters, Mrs. Otto (Hannah) Paysen, Manning; Mrs. Glenn (Lizzie) McLaughlin, Davenport.

He was a member of Manual Lodge and Salona Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star; American Legion, and of the First Presbyterian church in Manning. Mr. Schrum was a World War I veteran.

Dinner for the family was served at the Presbyterian Church by the Past Presidents of the American Legion Auxiliary. Lunch was served by the Presbyterian Women's Organization and the Order of the Eastern Star.


Nicholas Schrum is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
