Phillip was part of Sherman's March to the Sea and freeing the Union Soldiers at Libby Prison


Phillip came to Illinois from Canada at age 8.
Shortly after his discharge he came to Fayette County, Iowa, where he resided for two years, moving to O'Brien County, Iowa, in 1871, settling in Liberty Township, near Sutherland.
He then moved to the town of Manning, being one of the first citizens.
He joined the Christian Church and was a member of A.F. & A.M. and McPherson Post 33.
