R.W. Dethlefs passes in city
Dethlefs, Contractor, Dies At 66

Robert W. Dethlefs, prominent building contractor, died Monday night, August 23, 1965. Son of Peter and Augusta (Wohlers) Dethlefs, he was born January 24, 1899; he was 66.

Mr. Dethlefs succumbed at 9 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Hospital.

A native of Manning, Iowa, Mr. Dethlefs was a partner in Dethlefs & Hannon, contractors, at 218 W. 11th St.

He came to Anniston, Alabama, in 1937, after doing government work with War Department engineers at Fort Benning and Fort McClellan. From 1938 to 1942 he supervised many large jobs in this section for Smith Sr. Pew Construction Company and he and Elbert Boozer organized Dethlefs-Boozer Construction Company in 1941. The Dethlefs-Hannon partnership was formed later.

One of the most outstanding projects of his company was the Civic Center at Gadsden, Alabama.

Mr. Dethlefs was a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church, past president of the Alabama Branch of the Associated General Contractors of America, and a member of the Anniston Rotary Club, Anniston Country Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and American Legion.

A veteran of World War I, he received his BA degree and engineering degree from State University of Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m., at Gray Brown - Service Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. J. Phillips Noble officiating.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Anniston, Alabama.

He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Evelyn A. Dethlefs; two daughters, Mrs. Noel Mackisoc of St. George, Utah; and Miss Marlin Dethlefs of Anniston; one brother, Edwin Dethlefs of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Henry Witham of Indianapolis, Indiana; two half-sisters, Mrs. Leonie Frick and Mrs. Amalie Schneekloth of San Francisco.

Pallbearers will be Lewis R. Downing, Dr. Louis Horn, Leonard Roberts, T.P. Roberts, Harry Rainwater and George Kilby.

Another brother, Rudolph H. Dethlefs preceded him in death, and also served during WWI.
