DEATH OF JOSHUA ROGERS.
Mr. Joshua Rogers died at his home in this city on Wednesday morning, June 23, 1897. A
complication of ailments brought about his demise. He had been ailing for many months, but
nothing serious was thought of it until about ten days ago when he was obliged to give up
and take to his bed. The physician pronouncing his condition hopeless, the sons and
daughters were summoned, so that when the end came he passed away surrounded by
those who had been nearest and dearest to him in life. Mr. Rogers was an old soldier, and is
now resting on fame's eternal camping ground with the many comrades who have preceded
him. This good man will be long and sadly missed by all who knew him, missed because of
his personality, which was ever agreeable, of his kindness, which was one of his
distinguished traits of character. There was nothing of the romantic or adventurous in the life
of Mr. Rogers, but there was in it that unaffected simplicity that is as rare as it is ennobling.
The funeral was held on yesterday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Christian Church, and the esteem in which he was held by the people was attested by the large company of friends and neighbors who gathered there to pay a last tribute of their respect to his memory. The services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Paine, of Irwin, McPherson Post, G.A.R., of which he was a member, attended in a body. The interment took place at the cemetery south of town.
The subject of this sketch was born in the county of Lichen, state of Ohio, July 9, 1836, making him 61 years, 11 months and 14 days old at the time of his death. He came to Iowa in 1855 and for the past 13 years has been a resident of this vicinity. In 1861, he enlisted in the 12th Infantry of Michigan and served three years in the regular army. While out on a furlough, he was married to Anna Farmer, March 23, 1863, at Forrest Home, Poweshiek County, Iowa. Besides the wife, five children survive him, namely, Mrs. Peter Stephany, Manning; Mrs. Oren Corner, Gray; Frank, Bear Grove, and Deward and Charles, Manning.
