KARL BERNHARDT ROHR

February 28, 1896 - April 2, 1990


Karl was inducted into the U.S. Army September 5, 1918, at Carroll. He served with the Motor Transport Corps, Repair Unit, 304. SFC Rohr was honorably discharged at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on November 21, 1918. Remarks on his discharge papers about his service: Honest and Faithful.


Funeral services for Karl Bernhardt Rohr were held Thursday, April 5, 1990 at 10:30 a. m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Iowa. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated the service with Paula Weiss as organist. Interment was held in Manning City Cemetery with Glen Ahrendsen, Dennis Backhaus, Larry Mahnke, William Bruhn, Russell Mohr, and Dick Weiss as casketbearers.

Military honors were given by Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517, both of Manning.

Karl, son of Henry and Maria Sonkson Rohr, was born February 28, 1896 in Manning, Iowa. He was baptized July 5, 1896 and confirmed June 16, 1912 in the Lutheran faith. Karl attended Manning School and graduated from Manning High School in 1913. He enrolled at Iowa State University and studied agriculture. After college, Karl worked as a herdsman for Escher and Ryan for five years.

He was drafted in the United States Army and served during World War I.

January 21, 1920 Karl was united in marriage with Cecile Stephens of Irwin, Iowa. To this union three daughters were born, all of whom died in infancy. Karl and Cecil farmed for 27 years. In 1947 they moved to Manning where he worked as a carpenter, until he retired. His wife died November 23, 1979. Karl enjoyed woodworking and fishing and was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church.

March of 1986 Karl moved to the Manilla Manor. He entered Crawford County Memorial Hospital March 18 and passed away there Monday, April 2, 1990 at the age of 94 years, 1 month and 5 days.
Besides his wife and daughters, he was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Rohr, Jr.; and by seven sisters, Frieda Wenzel, Jessie Kuhl, Wilhelmine Kuhn, Alma Pahde, Della Rohr, Elsa Rowedder and Marie Rohr.

Karl is survived by three sisters: Martha Fieseler of Iowa City, Helen Schultz of Lytton, and Lucia and her husband, Marion Lund, of Dow City, by two sisters-in-law, Nora Rohr Johnson, of Seattle, Washington and Inez Brennen of Irwin; by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Karl Rohr is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
