William Struve

William Struve, son of Carsten and Margaret (Joens) Struve was born in Clinton, Iowa, March 4, 1893.
He served in the United States Army in France from September 27, 1918 until March 4, 1919 in the engineering corp.
He belonged to the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a drummer in the Manning Drum and Bugle Corps.

Bill was married to Melinda Sonksen on January 14, 1925.
He was the father of Marjorie (Mrs. Bud Stahl) and Lois (Mrs. Lyle Hansen).
His siblings were: Mrs. Ferdinand Hill, Claus, George H., John J., Peter, Mrs. Herb Hinze, Mrs. Heinz Brandt, and Emil.

He farmed one mile southwest of Manning. He was a crop farmer, raised pure bred Duroc hogs and had a milk delivery route.

William died of heart disease in the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines on August 21, 1942 at the age of 49.
He was buried with military honors in the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.


Funeral Rites Today for William Struve, Manning
World War Veteran Died Friday Evening in Veteran's Hospital

Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Ohde Funeral Home for William Struve, 49, a Veteran of World War I, who died of heart disease in the, Veterans Hospital at Des Moines at 9:30 Friday night, August 21, 1942. Mr. Struve, who had been in ill health for some time, had entered the hospital June 8.

The Rev. David MacDougall, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiated at the, rites. Music was provided by a quartet composed of Mae (Mrs. N.C.) Schrum, Mrs. Jack Peters, Herman C. Pahde, and Clifford M. Johnson.

Mr. Struve was buried with military honors in the Manning Cemetery. Members of the local American Legion Post comprised the firing squad. Pallbearers, who were members of the Legion post and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, were Clarence Kuhse, Herman Opperman, Lawrence J. Nickum, Albert Karsten, Peter Struve, and Dr. Virgel R. Anderson.

Mr. Struve, a son of Carsten and Margaretha (Joens) Struve, both deceased, was born at Clinton, Iowa, March 4, 1893. When he was nine years old, he came with his parents to Iowa, the family locating on a farm south of Aspinwall. For a number of years Mr. Struve has lived on farm one mile southwest of Manning.

He was married at Manning in 1928 to Melinda Sonksen, who survives. He also leaves two children, Marjorie and Lois, and the following brothers and sisters: Anna (Mrs. Ferdinand) Hill, Claus, George, and Peter Struve, Margaret (Mrs. Herbert) Hinze, and Lillian (Mrs. Henry) Brandt, all of Manning, and Emil Struve, who is in an Army Camp in California.

Three sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Struve served in the United States army in France from September 27, 1918, until March 7, 1919, with the 468th Infantry. He belonged to the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts here.

He had taken his second degree in Masonry.
