Eugene Joseph, son of Victor and Cecelia (Green) Case, was born May 4, 1926, at Wiota, Iowa. He grew up in Harrison County where he attended country school and graduated from St. Mary's in Portsmouth.
In May of 1944, Gene was inducted into the U.S. Army. He trained at Fort Hood, Texas, and served in the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Division. He received the following medals: Southeast Pacific (Luzon and Japan), Purple Heart, and Philippine Liberation. Gene returned to Iowa after being honorably discharged in September of 1946.
On February 29, 1949, Gene was united in marriage with Ramona M. Kimmen at the Catholic Church in Defiance. Three children were born to this union. Gene and Ramona farmed in the Logan and Westphalia area, and he also drove a truck until moving to Manning in December of 1953. He then went to work at the Manning Creamery Company until 1972 when he became a sales representative for R.C. Booth Enterprises of Harlan. Gene retired in 1991, but continued to work part time with R.C. Booth.
Throughout the years, Gene was a very active member of Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus, Lion's Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517, American Legion Post 22, and the Manning Housing Board. Gene and Ramona traveled to Europe (Switzerland), Alaska, Hawaii, The Caribbean, and throughout the United States. Gene also enjoyed volunteering, playing cards, gardening, writing poetry, fishing and walking his dog "Lucky."
In 2015 Gene became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home (now Accura Healthcare) in Manning, Iowa, where he passed away on Saturday October 26, 2019. He was 93 years, 5 months, and 22 days of age.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Jeanine Hinners; brothers Richard (Margaret) Case and Tom (Marie) Case; other sisters-in-law Mary Case and Phyllis (Richard) Grote; two brothers-in-law: Kenneth (Darlene) Kimmen and Charles Jacobs.
Gene is survived by his wife Ramona Case of Manning; daughter Linda Case of Keyport, New Jersey; son Robert Case and wife Dolores of Horizon City, Texas; four grandchildren: Brett Case and wife Carly; Khristina Case; Jamey Hinners; Nicole Slauter and husband Billy; five great-grandchildren: Matilda Case; Destiny Case; Fallon Breeze Case; Gavin Slauter; and Drake Slauter; brother Frank Case of Carroll; in-laws: Ray and Ellen Kimmen of Hastings, Minnesota; Bonnie Jacobs of Harlan; Mike and Judy Kimmen of Defiance; Al and Gail Kimmen of Isabella, Missouri; and Lawrence Kimmen of Dunlap.
