A one-car accident at a county road T-intersection about 9:05 Thursday night two miles east and three-quarters of a mile south of Manilla took the life of Gene A. Adams, 17, Route 1, Botna.
Adams, a senior at Irwin Community Schools, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Verna (Carlson) Adams, who farms about three miles northeast of Irwin.
The victim, a National Honor Society student, was driver, according to the highway patrol report. He died enroute to Crawford County Memorial Hospital, patrolman Robert Elliott, Harlan, said. He suffered head and chest injuries in the accident.
A passenger in the Adams car was William Vernon Lueth, 15, who lives with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Christill, Irwin. He suffered a possible broken jaw and skull fracture. He is listed in fair condition at the Denison Hospital. Lueth is a junior at Irwin.
The car, a 1955 Ford, was estimated a total lass after extensive front-end damage.
Adams was driving north on a road just over the Shelby County line in Crawford County. The car went through the intersection and plowed into an embankment, stopping at a fence about ten feet off the north shoulder of the intersecting east-west road, patrolmen said.
Both Adams, and Lueth were football players at Irwin High School. Irwin postponed their opening game of the season with Ar-We-Va Friday night.
